Volkswagen Recalls ID.4 for in Their Batteries That Could Catch Fire

Volkswagen ID.4 Recall Due to High-Voltage Battery Defect

Volkswagen recently announced a recall affecting approximately 43,881 VW ID.4s due to a high-voltage battery defect that poses a risk of fire breakout. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a document highlighting this issue. The recall specifically covers certain 2023 to 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV units.

The automaker identified the root cause of the problem to be the absence of required self-discharge detection software in the recalled ID.4 models. This absence can lead to overheating of the battery module, potentially resulting in a fire.

Volkswagen conducted a joint analysis with the battery supplier to investigate the defect. While the direct cause remains unclear, the automaker suspects that alterations made by the supplier may have triggered the issue with the self-discharge battery modules. Drivers of the affected vehicles may observe a decrease in the electric vehicles’ range and performance.

Volkswagen’s Solution for Affected ID.4 Owners

Volkswagen recommends that owners of affected ID.4 vehicles bring them to the nearest Volkswagen dealership. Since the vehicles are under warranty, Volkswagen assures that it will address the issue at no cost to the owners. The resolution process includes checking the battery health, updating the SSD software, and replacing any faulty battery cells as necessary.
