Amazon Introduces Revamped Dash Cart for Smart Shopping

Amazon has announced the launch of an updated version of its smart shopping cart, set to be deployed in numerous Whole Foods stores by the end of this year. The new Dash Cart boasts an improved item scanner located conveniently next to the display screen, as well as a new NFC reader for seamless credit card or phone payments.

Previously, Amazon’s Dash Cart design featured scanners under and in front of the handle, which could be difficult to spot. Additionally, it only allowed payments with the credit card linked to the user’s Amazon account.

The upgraded Dash Cart includes a new scale next to the handle, working in conjunction with on-cart cameras, weight sensors, and deep learning models to ensure accurate pricing for each item. This new design eliminates large sensors inside the cart, providing a 40% larger capacity and 25% lighter weight.

The Dash Cart features an interactive store map on its display, similar to Instacart’s Caper Cart. Users can sync their shopping list created with Alexa and monitor their expenses as they add items to the cart. Built-in sensors and computer vision detect when items are removed, automatically updating the total. Customers can skip the checkout line and exit through a designated Dash Cart lane.

Amazon’s introduction of the new Dash Cart coincides with the company’s efforts to innovate its grocery business, strengthening the connection between Whole Foods and the Amazon brand. The Dash Cart has already been implemented in three Whole Foods stores and two Amazon Fresh stores.
