Wild Ride: Mario Kart World – Where the Driving Cow Rules the Road
Mario Kart World: A Look into the Development Process
Development for Mario Kart World began in 2017 with the intention of creating a game for the original Nintendo Switch. However, the project evolved into a game for the Switch 2 due to the developers feeling that a technological boost was necessary to fully realize their vision. One of the most intriguing aspects of the game is the introduction of a new character – Cow.
In a surprising twist, popular characters like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach take a backseat to Cow, the reigning queen of Moo Moo Meadows. With an undeniable aura that can captivate even the most die-hard Nintendo fans, Cow has become a central figure in the game, momentarily diverting attention from concerns about pricing and the transition to the new console.
Insights into the development process and the significance of Cow were shared in a recent interview with key members of the Nintendo team, including producer Kosuke Yabuki, programming director Kenta Sato, art director Masaaki Ishikawa, planning team lead Shintaro Jikumaru, and music lead Atsuko Asahi. The interview, which covers various aspects of the game, has been divided into four parts due to its length.
Yabuki revealed, “We began prototyping for the next Mario Kart game in March 2017, even during the development of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. By the end of that year, the project officially started, with a focus on creating a gameplay experience that involved driving around a large world, as opposed to racing on individual courses.”
Sato highlighted the challenges faced during development for the Nintendo Switch system, stating, “It was difficult for us to incorporate everything we wanted, leading to discussions about visual compromises, resolution adjustments, and potential frame rate reductions. The decision to transition to the Switch 2 was eventually proposed by Yabuki in 2020.”
Ishikawa emphasized the need for more detailed graphics on the Switch 2, expressing relief at the opportunity to enhance the visual richness of the game. The addition of Cow as a central character was a result of brainstorming new ideas for the game, with a designer’s sketch of Cow driving serving as a breakthrough moment.
The development team referred to environmental decoration characters like Cow as “NPC drivers,” highlighting the humor in seeing a cow maneuvering a vehicle. Despite Cow’s unusual presence, Ishikawa reassured fans that she still retains her animal nature, evident in her jumping pose and her role as an inspirational character for future additions to the series.
As players anticipate the release of Mario Kart World, the question arises – will Cow become a beloved character in the gaming community? Share your thoughts and excitement for the game below!
