Windows 11 Reaches One Billion Users Faster Than Windows 10

The latest operating system from Microsoft, Windows 11, has achieved a significant milestone by reaching one billion users. This impressive feat was accomplished during the recent holiday quarter, marking a faster adoption rate compared to its predecessor, Windows 10, nearly six years ago.

Microsoft Celebrates Windows 11 Success

During Microsoft’s fiscal Q2 earnings call in 2026, CEO Satya Nadella announced the milestone achievement, stating, “Windows reached a big milestone, 1 billion Windows 11 users, up over 45 percent year-over-year.” The growth in Windows 11 users can be attributed to the end of support for Windows 10, which also contributed to an increase in Microsoft’s Windows OEM revenues.

Strong Adoption of Windows 11

Microsoft’s Windows 11 saw a surge in users throughout December, with Windows chief Pavan Davuluri revealing at Microsoft Ignite that “nearly a billion people” were running the latest operating system. This indicates a strong and growing user base for Windows 11.

Faster Growth Than Windows 10

One of the most interesting aspects of Windows 11’s success is the speed at which it reached one billion users. It took Windows 11 only 1,576 days to achieve this milestone, compared to the 1,706 days it took Windows 10. Microsoft’s initial goal was to reach a billion devices running Windows 10 within three years of its release, but this timeline was extended due to the cancelation of Windows Phone.
