Windows 11 is finally getting a movable taskbar

Movable Taskbar Making a Comeback in Windows 11

After almost five years, Microsoft is reintroducing the option to move the Windows taskbar to the top or sides of the screen. This highly requested feature is part of a series of updates coming to Windows 11 this year, aimed at addressing concerns about the operating system’s performance, reliability, and user experience.

Windows chief Pavan Davuluri expressed, “Repositioning the taskbar is one of the top requests we’ve received from users. We are introducing the ability to place it at the top or sides of the screen, allowing for greater customization of your workspace.”

This new taskbar flexibility will first be available to Windows Insiders in the upcoming weeks before being rolled out to all Windows 11 users later in the year. Additionally, Microsoft is developing a smaller taskbar option that will be released as an alternative later on.

Although Windows has had a movable taskbar for decades, this functionality was removed in the initial release of Windows 11 in 2021. Many users were dissatisfied with the new taskbar’s lack of features such as displaying the time and date on multiple monitors, small icons, or the ability to reposition it. The taskbar redesign was a result of Microsoft’s work on Windows 10X, which was originally designed for dual-screen devices before being adapted into Windows 11 for laptops.

Microsoft has been gradually reintroducing popular elements of the Windows 10 taskbar into Windows 11. Recently, the company began testing an agenda calendar view within the Windows 11 notification center, a feature that was present in Windows 10 but absent in Windows 11.
