Apple’s Triumphant Return: Winning the Oscar with ‘F1’ Sound

Apple made a significant impact at the Academy Awards four years ago when it made history by winning a Best Picture Oscar for the film “CODA.” While there were hopes for a repeat success with Apple’s Brad Pitt-led racing movie “F1” this year, the top Oscar was ultimately out of reach. However, “F1” did manage to secure a win for Best Sound, ensuring that Apple did not leave empty-handed.

The movie “F1: The Movie” received nominations in four categories – Best Picture, Film Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects. Despite being the highest-grossing sports film ever, it was considered a long shot for the Best Picture category from the start. The Academy rarely recognizes “popcorn” blockbusters in this category, with the last pure sports-action film to win Best Picture being “Rocky” in 1977.

While “F1” faced tough competition in the technical categories, it managed to beat out other contenders to win the Best Sound award. This marked Apple’s second major Oscar win, following its success with “CODA” in the previous year.

Apple’s journey at the Oscars began with a bang, as “CODA” made history as the first film from a streaming service to win the prestigious Best Picture award. In contrast, streaming giant Netflix has faced multiple nominations without any wins, despite having multiple films in contention.

In 2021, Apple received two Oscar nominations, but they were not in the Best Picture category. The following year, Apple won Best Animated Short Film for “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.” However, despite receiving a record 13 nominations in 2024, Apple was shut out at the awards ceremony.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to focus on one or two major theatrical releases each year while continuing to develop smaller projects for the small screen. Rumors of a sequel to “F1” are already circulating, and Apple’s exclusive partnership with Formula 1 for streaming rights in the US is expected to further strengthen its position in the industry.

Overall, Apple’s success at the Oscars and its strategic approach to content production indicate a promising future for the tech giant in the entertainment industry.
