Berlin-based Mirelo raises €35 million seed round co-led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz

Mirelo, a groundbreaking audio company, recently secured approximately €35 million ($41 million) in a seed funding round. The investment was co-led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, with additional participation from Atlantic.vc and TriplePoint Capital. This funding marks a significant milestone for the Berlin-based startup, which was founded by two senior AI researchers with a passion for music. The founders left big tech companies to focus on developing cutting-edge foundation models in audio, an area of AI that has traditionally been underdeveloped.

The rise of Mirelo reflects a broader trend in creative expression, as AI tools empower artists and designers to bring their ideas to life. Sound plays a crucial role in influencing emotions and shaping how we experience reality. Despite the advancements in AI for text, images, and video, sound has lagged behind. As a result, creators and sound designers often spend hours searching for stock audio and manually syncing effects. Mirelo aims to address this challenge by offering a platform that generates perfectly synchronized sound effects for videos in a matter of seconds.

The founders of Mirelo, CJ Simon-Gabriel and Florian Wenzel, met as AI researchers at AWS Labs before launching their own venture. CJ, with a background in machine learning and causal inference, and Florian, with expertise in deep learning, share a passion for music and a frustration with the limited focus on audio in the AI field. CJ, a trained musician, envisions democratizing access to high-quality sound for videos, while Florian brings his musical talents as a member of an electro band in Berlin.

Mirelo recently released a new video-to-sound-effect model, Mirelo SFX v1.5, which can generate various soundtrack versions faster than real-time. The company’s models are lightweight and deliver superior quality compared to competitors. Georgia Stevenson from Index Ventures and Guido Appenzeller from Andreessen Horowitz praised Mirelo’s innovative approach to sound effect creation, highlighting the team’s expertise in AI and their focus on audio’s emotional power.

The investment in Mirelo signifies a shift towards specialized models for sound effect creation, a technically challenging and underexplored area in generative media. The company’s research-driven team has made breakthroughs in tokenization, data curation, and conditioning, positioning them to reshape how the world experiences sound.

In conclusion, Mirelo’s success story showcases the potential of AI in revolutionizing audio production and enhancing the creative process for artists and designers. With a focus on empowering creators and professionals alike, Mirelo aims to become the go-to audio solution for visual content across various mediums, including videos, gaming, social media, and films.
