Digg, the once-popular link-sharing site created by Kevin Rose, is facing turbulent times as it announces a significant reduction in its workforce. While the company reassures that it is not shutting down, CEO Justin Mezzell reveals that Rose will be returning full-time to focus on reviving Digg.

Despite maintaining an advisory role at True Ventures, Rose has decided to prioritize Digg’s revitalization efforts moving forward.

Initially envisioned as a platform offering an alternative to traditional community forums, Digg aimed to provide a space for users to share links, media, and engage in discussions. However, the company quickly found itself grappling with the challenge of combating bots, a problem that persisted from its early days.

Acknowledging the prevalence of bots in today’s online landscape, Mezzell highlights the difficulty in distinguishing genuine user activity from automated spam on Digg.

In response to the influx of bot-generated content, Digg implemented various measures such as banning accounts and utilizing internal tools and external support. Despite these efforts, the integrity of user votes, a key component of the platform’s content ranking system, was compromised.

Mezzell emphasizes that the issue of bot spam extends beyond Digg, reflecting a broader challenge faced by the internet as a whole.

Moreover, Mezzell candidly admits the formidable competition posed by established rivals, hinting at the difficulty of competing with platforms like Reddit.

While the extent of the layoffs remains undisclosed, Digg affirms its commitment to reimagining the platform as a truly unique entity. The company has removed its app from the App Store, with the layoff announcement currently serving as the sole content on the Digg website. However, the Diggnation podcast hosted by Rose will continue.

In a strategic move, Rose and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian acquired Digg with the intention of empowering communities with greater control and ownership. This acquisition, facilitated by True Ventures, Seven Seven Six, and S32, aimed to redefine the platform’s user experience.
