Amazon has announced its decision to not renew the lease of its office building located at 1915 Terry Ave. in the Denny Triangle area of downtown Seattle, just blocks away from its main headquarters. The seven-story, 251,000-square-foot space, owned by Seattle Children’s since 2014, will see Amazon moving out by the end of May, relocating employees to other offices.

Confirmation of Amazon’s departure from the building was made to GeekWire on Tuesday, following an initial report by the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Commonly referred to as Kumo, the 1950s-era building is situated in close proximity to Amazon’s main office towers and the iconic Spheres. While Amazon did not disclose the exact number of employees stationed at the building, it is part of the company’s extensive presence in Seattle, where it employs around 50,000 corporate and tech professionals.

Amazon’s decision to exit this space comes amidst a broader restructuring that saw over 1,400 Seattle-based employees affected by recent company-wide layoffs totaling 16,000 individuals.

Reports indicate that since 2020, Amazon has relinquished more than 1 million square feet of office space in Seattle, primarily in the Denny Triangle area. The company has been focusing on expanding its operations in Bellevue, across Lake Washington, where it has been developing new office buildings and aims to accommodate 25,000 employees as part of its regional headquarters.
