Kali Linux 2025.4: Unveiling 3 Powerful Tools and Enhanced Desktop Experience
Kali Linux has recently unveiled version 2025.4, marking its final update for the year. This latest release introduces three new hacking tools, enhancements to desktop environments, a preview of Wifipumpkin3 in NetHunter, and improved Wayland support.
Catering to cybersecurity professionals and ethical hackers, Kali Linux is a specialized distribution tailored for tasks like red-teaming, penetration testing, security assessments, and network research.
Available as an installable operating system or a live environment, Kali Linux supports a wide array of hardware, including Raspberry Pi devices and compatible Android phones through Kali NetHunter.
New Additions to Kali Linux 2025.4
Each new iteration of Kali Linux brings fresh tools to the table, and this update is no exception. The latest additions include:
- bpf-linker – A straightforward BPF static linker
- evil-winrm-py – A Python-based tool for executing commands on remote Windows machines using WinRM
- hexstrike-ai – An MCP server enabling AI agents to autonomously run tools
Updates to Desktop Environments
Kali Linux 2025.4 brings a host of updates to its desktop environments, including Gnome 49, KDE Plasma, and Xfce.
GNOME 49 features refreshed themes, a new Showtime video player, reorganized tool folders in the app grid, and new shortcuts for quickly opening a terminal. Notably, GNOME has completely phased out X11 support in this release, now relying solely on Wayland.
Developers have also incorporated support for keyboard shortcuts to swiftly access a terminal.
KDE Plasma has been upgraded to version 6.5, introducing enhancements such as improved window tiling, an enhanced screenshot tool, easier clipboard access, and a more flexible fuzzy search in KRunner.
Xfce now supports color themes, providing functionality akin to what’s already available in GNOME and KDE. This allows users to customize icons and interface colors with greater ease.
With GNOME fully transitioning to Wayland, the Kali Linux team has included comprehensive VM guest utilities support for VirtualBox, VMware, and QEMU.
Updates to Kali NetHunter
Kali NetHunter has received its share of updates with this release, including expanded device support for Android 16 on the Samsung Galaxy S10, the OnePlus Nord, as well as Android 15 on Xiaomi Mi 9.
The NetHunter Terminal has been revamped with updated compatibility for Magisk versions utilizing interactive mode, preventing terminal sessions from prematurely closing upon pressing CTRL+C.
Additionally, a preview of Wifipumpkin3, a framework for rogue access point attacks, is now accessible in the NetHunter app, featuring phishing templates for popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, iCloud, and Snapchat.
Other Notable Changes
This release also encompasses various updates and improvements, including:
- The Kali Live image now exclusively distributed via BitTorrent due to its increased size, surpassing traditional HTTP download capacities.
- Four new community mirrors, including three in Asia and one in the United States, have been added to enhance download availability.
- Kali Cloud and the Kali WSL app have undergone several behind-the-scenes enhancements and reliability fixes.
Obtaining Kali Linux 2025.4
To transition to Kali Linux 2025.4, users can either upgrade their existing installations, select a platform, or directly download ISO images for new installations and live distributions.
For those updating from a previous version, the following commands can be utilized to upgrade to the latest version:
echo "deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free non-free-firmware" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade
cp -vrbi /etc/skel/. ~/
[ -f /var/run/reboot-required ] && sudo reboot -f
If running Kali on the Windows Subsystem for Linux, upgrading to WSL2 is recommended for an improved experience, including the ability to use graphical apps. The WSL version utilized by Kali can be checked using the ‘wsl -l -v’ command in a Windows command prompt.
Post-upgrade, users can verify the success of the upgrade by executing the following command:
grep VERSION /etc/os-release
