Meta to Personalize Ads Based on AI Conversations

Meta has announced plans to utilize conversations with its AI assistant to tailor the ads users see on its platforms. Starting December 16th, users will also be presented with suggested posts, reels, and Facebook groups related to their AI text and voice chats.

Personalized Recommendations

For instance, if a user inquires about hiking to the Meta AI, Meta may gather that the user is interested in hiking and subsequently display recommendations for hiking groups on Facebook, posts from friends regarding local trails, or ads for hiking gear. Meta assures users that it will not use AI conversations related to sensitive topics such as religious views, sexual orientation, or political beliefs to tailor content.

Privacy Measures

Christy Harris, Meta’s privacy head, emphasized that the platform has policies in place to protect sensitive information. While users cannot opt out of having their AI chats utilized for personalization, they can adjust their ad preferences in the settings menu. Additionally, Meta clarifies that encrypted conversations will not be affected by this privacy policy update.

Cross-Platform Integration

For users who have linked their Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp accounts in Meta’s accounts center, interactions with the AI chatbot on one platform may influence ads or recommendations on another. This includes one-on-one conversations with Meta AI in apps like WhatsApp and Messenger.

Notification and Rollout

Meta will begin informing users about these changes on October 7th, with a global rollout planned for most users. However, users in the UK, the European Union, and South Korea will not be included initially as the company addresses regulatory requirements.
