Google Removes Polymarket Bets from News Results

Google News recently featured Polymarket bets alongside legitimate news articles, but the search engine has since removed these results. According to Google spokesperson Ned Adriance, the appearance of Polymarket in Google News was an error, and the site does not meet the eligibility criteria to be included in news results.

The Polymarket links directed users to betting markets related to specific news events. For example, a search for information on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz displayed a Polymarket bet on the number of ships that would be permitted to pass. Despite initially sparking speculation about a potential integration with Google, it was confirmed that Polymarket’s presence in Google News was a mistake.

Reports of Polymarket’s inclusion in Google News surfaced on social media as early as January. While Google has partnered with both Kalshi and Polymarket for data integration on Google Finance, it remains unclear if this partnership influenced Polymarket’s brief appearance in news results.

The situation raises questions about the vetting process for news sources on Google News and the potential impact of partnerships with betting platforms on news credibility. As users increasingly rely on digital platforms for news consumption, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of information presented is crucial.
