Potential Danger: GM Recalls Thousands of Full Size SUVs Due to Rear Wheel Lock Up Defects

A recall has been issued by General Motors for about 43,732 full-size SUVs due to a problem with the 10-speed automatic transmission. The issue stems from a transmission control valve in the affected models that may have experienced excessive wear, leading to fluid leakage and potential power loss.

According to a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects full-size SUVs from the 2022 model year, including:

The excessive wear on the control valves in the 10-speed automatic transmission can result in fluid leakage, causing a loss of pressure that may lead to unexpected movements of the valve. These movements and pressure loss could result in harsh shifting of the transmission or, in severe cases, temporary or permanent locking of the rear wheels. The rear wheel lockup typically occurs when the transmission tries to downshift from eight gears.

As a solution, dealers will install new transmission control module (TCM) software that can monitor valve performance and detect excessive wear before any wheel lockup occurs, typically around 10,000 miles in advance. If the software identifies valve wear, the transmission will be restricted to fifth gear to prevent wheel lockup. Additionally, a service engine light and reduced propulsion message will appear on the instrument panel.

For owners to verify if the recall has been addressed, they can check the NHTSA recall website. New transmission control software has been developed for the 2023 model year and later versions of Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles to detect excessive wear. Notification letters will be sent to owners starting on March 30.
