Preserving the Past, Gaming for the Future: The Fight to Save Online Games
The Stop Killing Games Campaign: A Push for Long-Term Action
The Stop Killing Games campaign is making waves in the gaming community as they await a crucial meeting with European Union politicians. The focus of this meeting? The impact of server shutdowns on online-only games, rendering them unplayable. This issue has garnered significant attention, with a petition amassing nearly 1.3 million verified signatures to push for action against publishers who abandon games without providing a way for them to continue running.
Instead of sitting idly by, the campaign organizers have announced additional steps they will take to amplify their message in the long term. They plan to establish two Stop Killing Games non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to cover Europe and the US.
YouTuber Ross Scott, a prominent voice in the campaign, highlighted the advantages of launching these NGOs. He emphasized the importance of long-term lobbying efforts and the potential for these organizations to act as watchdogs, enabling players to report game-related issues to consumer protection agencies.
NGOs, as a social studies refresher, are groups that advocate for specific issues. From fighting inequality to promoting wildlife conservation, these organizations play a vital role in addressing societal concerns. Ross Scott credited campaigner Moritz Katzner for spearheading the push for the NGOs and the EU petition.
As the campaign gears up for their meeting with EU lawmakers, the outcome remains uncertain. Ross Scott admitted, “We actually have no idea what to expect.” Despite the ambiguity, the campaigners remain steadfast in their mission to bring attention to the challenges faced by online gamers.
