Republicans Criticize ‘Woke’ Netflix, Overlook YouTube
Netflix Faces Republican Criticism in Senate Hearing
When Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos appeared at a Senate hearing focused on the Warner Bros. merger, he was unexpectedly bombarded with questions about “woke” ideology on the streaming platform. While the focus was on Netflix, another major player in the streaming world, YouTube, seemed to go unnoticed.
Senator Josh Hawley raised concerns about the content available on Netflix for children, specifically targeting the representation of transgender individuals. This line of questioning echoed previous criticism from figures like Elon Musk, who had urged users to boycott Netflix over what he called a “transgender woke agenda.” Despite Sarandos’ assertion that Netflix’s primary goal is to entertain rather than push a political agenda, other Republican senators continued to press him on various issues, including the platform’s response to social events like the murder of George Floyd and controversial shows like Cuties.
As the discussion veered towards Netflix’s potential dominance in the streaming market, the comparison to YouTube became apparent. While Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery combined still fall short of YouTube’s viewership share, Netflix has been actively competing with YouTube for viewership. Sarandos emphasized that YouTube is no longer just a platform for cat videos but a significant player in the TV landscape.
“YouTube is not just cat videos anymore. YouTube is TV.”
Unlike Netflix, YouTube offers free access to a vast library of user-generated content without the need for expensive production costs. With its recommendation algorithm and easy accessibility, YouTube has cultivated a loyal audience base. However, not all content on YouTube is of high quality, with some creators focusing on sensational or inappropriate material.
Despite YouTube’s dominance and potential for controversial content, it has largely escaped the scrutiny faced by Netflix in the ongoing culture war. If lawmakers are truly concerned about the content their children are exposed to, they may need to shift their focus to how YouTube curates and promotes content. Alternatively, as Sarandos suggested during the hearing, they could simply choose to unsubscribe from platforms that do not align with their values.
