Apple has partnered with the Sydney Opera House for a unique collaboration aimed at nurturing creativity among young individuals in one of Australia’s most renowned cities. The collaboration includes a yearlong program that kicks off with a newly commissioned artwork titled “Illuminating Creativity.” This artwork will be projected onto the Opera House’s eastern Bennelong sails, serving as a platform for creativity, community engagement, and showcasing Australian talent.

Unlike Apple’s previous exhibit at Battersea Power Station, which featured Christmas trees, the Sydney collaboration will showcase a variety of artworks from 10 emerging Australian artists. These artworks are created using Procreate on iPad, a popular app for artistic work. Apple is inviting members of the public to attend free Today at Apple sessions from March 9 to March 15 to create their own digital iPad artwork for possible inclusion in the final projection. The display will take place from March 25 to March 27 and will also feature works from commissioned artists.

In addition to the “Illuminating Creativity” project, Apple and the Opera House plan to host interactive programming and other experiences for young people. Apple will leverage technology to enhance these experiences and support the Opera House’s Centre for Creativity. The collaboration also involves Apple being a founding partner for a new international children’s festival to be presented later in the year.

Louise Herron AM, the CEO of the Sydney Opera House, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “The Sydney Opera House, like Apple, is synonymous with creativity. This collaboration is a natural fit between two organizations that continue to explore new ways for people to experience the world.”

The announcement also highlighted Procreate, the app used for creating the artworks, which was developed by Tasmanian company Savage Interactive. Rebecca Mills, an illustrator and one of the commissioned artists for the project, shared her experience with Procreate, emphasizing how it has transformed her career and allowed her to create award-winning artwork.

The Australian initiative mirrors Apple’s previous project at Battersea Power Station but with a slightly different approach. While the UK project required downloaded templates for submission, the Sydney collaboration allows for more free-form submissions during the Today at Apple sessions. The final selection of artworks will be projected onto the Sydney Opera House’s eastern Bennelong sails on March 25, 26, and 27.

Overall, the collaboration between Apple and the Sydney Opera House aims to inspire creativity, showcase Australian talent, and provide unique experiences for the community. The use of technology and artistic expression through Procreate demonstrates a commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in a culturally significant setting.
