Skull Horde, the latest offering from the creators of Bore Blasters, 8BitSkull, has finally hit the shelves today. My initial impressions are positive, though perhaps not as enthusiastic as Alice B’s (rest in peace) review of its predecessor. Despite this, Skull Horde manages to carve out its own identity with its unique blend of minion-raising and dungeon-crawling gameplay.

In Skull Horde, you assume the role of a decapitated necromancer, tasked with building and commanding an army of grotesque minions to do your bidding. As you progress through each stage, you’ll recruit new minions, combine them to create stronger units, and strategically deploy them to fend off hordes of enemies. Your focus will be on gathering loot and navigating through levels before the threat level becomes overwhelming.

After spending a few hours with the game, it’s clear that Skull Horde draws inspiration from various sources. From the reminiscent gameplay of a Diablo II Necromancer to the fast-paced action and randomized elements reminiscent of Vampire Survivors, the game offers a familiar yet engaging experience. The inclusion of roguelike elements, such as random runs and permanent talent trees, adds depth to the gameplay.

Despite its familiar foundations, Skull Horde offers plenty of room for experimentation. The multitude of minion combinations and item builds ensure that each run feels unique. Your survival hinges on your ability to adapt and optimize your strategies, as combat skills are not at your disposal. The game rewards players who delve into its intricacies, with each run presenting new opportunities for discovery and growth.

While Skull Horde may not reach the same levels of intensity as other autobattler classics, it excels in providing a fast-paced and rewarding gameplay experience.
