Windows 11 Testers Now Have Access to Experimental Features Without ViVeTool Restrictions
Microsoft Enhances Windows 11 Testing Experience for Insiders
In a bid to streamline the Windows Insider Program (WIP), Microsoft has introduced new changes that will make it easier for testers to access experimental features on Windows 11 without the need for third-party tools like ViVeTool. The company has merged the Dev and Canary testing rings into a new Experimental Channel, alongside a revamped Beta Channel, to simplify the testing process.
For years, Microsoft has been using Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology to gradually introduce new features to Windows 11 users. However, many testers have found it frustrating to discover that they are not part of A/B tests for exciting new features. This unpredictability has led to a lack of motivation among Insiders.
Previously, testers had to rely on tools like ViVeTool to enable specific feature IDs to access new features. With the introduction of the Feature Flags page in the Settings app for Windows Insiders in the Experimental Channel, users can now easily toggle specific features on or off. The Beta Channel will also no longer have a gradual rollout of features.
According to Microsoft principal group product manager Alec Oot, the company will prioritize enabling Feature flags for visible new features announced in WIP. This will allow users to provide feedback on the new feature flags setting and ensure that they do not miss out on official features due to A/B testing.
The simplification of testing channels for Windows 11 is another significant change aimed at enhancing the user experience. With the introduction of an advanced option to select Windows core versions compatible with hardware, users can now choose between the Beta or Experimental channels based on their preferences.
The Future Platforms option in the Experimental Channel is designed for enthusiasts and developers who seek access to the latest test builds of Windows 11. This channel will provide early previews of new features, while the Beta Channel will offer a more stable version before a full rollout.
Microsoft is also improving the process of switching between testing channels or opting out of the Windows Insider Program without the need for a clean reinstall. Insiders will soon be able to use an in-place upgrade to move between versions, making the testing experience more flexible.
