CISA Appoints New Acting Director in Quick Turnover
In a recent development, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) under the Department of Homeland Security is undergoing a leadership change. According to ABC reports, Nick Andersen, the executive assistant director for cybersecurity, will now take on the role of acting director at CISA. This transition comes shortly after Madhu Gottumukkala, who had been serving as the deputy director and acting director since May 2025, will be moving to a new position as the director of strategic implementation within DHS.
The change in leadership at CISA follows recent controversies surrounding Gottumukkala. There were reports that sensitive documents were uploaded to ChatGPT, a platform that had been off-limits for other DHS employees. Gottumukkala had sought special permission to use ChatGPT, leading to questions about cybersecurity protocols within the agency.
Gottumukkala’s departure from CISA comes amidst a challenging period for the agency. Over the past year, CISA has faced budget cuts, layoffs, and a loss of trust from local leaders, with many attributing these issues to politicization under the previous administration. Additionally, CISA is currently operating without a Senate-confirmed director, despite former President Trump’s nomination of Sean Plankey for the position. Plankey, who previously served in the Trump administration, has yet to be confirmed by the Senate, leaving CISA without a permanent leader.
