StarCraft Revolution: The Open-World Shooter of 2030
Blizzard’s Revival of the StarCraft Universe
Back in 2002, Blizzard made an attempt to bring the StarCraft universe into the realm of 3D shooters with StarCraft: Ghost. Unfortunately, the project languished in development limbo for years until its official cancellation in 2014 by Blizzard president Mike Morhaime. Fast forward to today, and Blizzard is reigniting the StarCraft franchise with a new game simply titled StarCraft. Dan Hay, a VP at Blizzard, made the exciting announcement at BlizzCon that after more than a decade of dormancy, StarCraft would be making a comeback in 2030. However, this time it will not be another top-down real-time strategy game, but rather an open-world shooter.
During the presentation, a cinematic trailer was unveiled focusing on the human United Earth Directorate faction gearing up to confront the Zerg. The Protoss make a brief appearance, hinting at their involvement. The trailer hints at the gritty and realistic tone of the new StarCraft game, portraying the harsh realities of warfare. The protagonist we follow in the trailer is depicted as expendable in the grand scheme of war, adding a layer of depth to the storyline.
While fans are thrilled about Blizzard’s decision to revive the long-dormant StarCraft series, there is a lingering hope for a true real-time strategy sequel to 2010’s StarCraft II.
