Blizzard Announces Return of StarCraft as an Open-World Shooter in 2030

Blizzard recently unveiled some exciting news at Blizzcon, revealing that the beloved franchise StarCraft is set to make a comeback in 2030. However, fans of the classic real-time strategy (RTS) game may be in for a surprise as the new iteration will be transformed into an open-world shooter.

The upcoming game, simply titled StarCraft, but subtitled Dominion in the announcement trailer, is set to take players back to the Koprulu Sector. The trailer teases a thrilling adventure, emphasizing courage, sacrifice, and the call to action.

The trailer boldly proclaims, “THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE DOMINION ANSWERED THE CALL WHEN MANKIND NEEDED THEM MOST. THEIR COURAGE HELD THE LINE. THEIR SACRIFICE BOUGHT US ANOTHER DAY. NOW THE CALL COMES TO YOU.”

While the release date is still far off, with potential delays along the way, the game is being developed under the leadership of Dan Hay, known for his work on the Far Cry series. This shift to an open-world shooter aligns with Blizzard’s previous attempts to explore different genres with the StarCraft universe.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Blizzard has ventured into adapting StarCraft into a more action-oriented game. The infamous StarCraft: Ghost project, announced in 2002 and later canceled, aimed to bring the franchise to consoles as a third-person shooter with stealth elements.

After a decade of dormancy, Blizzard is reviving StarCraft with a fresh perspective. Changes within the company, such as the disbandment of the ‘Classic Games’ team in 2020, reflect a shift in focus. With Vicarious Visions (now Blizzard Albany) potentially working on Diablo V, the future of Blizzard’s franchises seems promising.

While it’s exciting to see StarCraft making a return, the shift to a different genre may raise some eyebrows among fans. Nevertheless, Blizzard’s commitment to evolving its iconic series showcases a dedication to innovation and creativity.
