Australia’s Clean Air Revolution: How Emissions Regulations Transformed the Fate of Old Engines – VW
New Legislation Driving Change in the Automotive Industry
The automotive market in Australia is experiencing a shift due to new legislation aimed at promoting the adoption of cars with efficient engines and lower emissions. This legislation has already started to make a significant impact on the industry.
Before the implementation of these new laws, concerns were raised about Australia becoming a dumping ground for old, polluting engines. Automakers were not incentivized to bring their latest engine technology to the country. However, the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) has changed the landscape for new cars in Australia.
According to Volkswagen Commercial brand director, Nathan Johnson, the NVES has played a crucial role in reshaping the market by encouraging the evolution of drivelines. He mentioned that prior to NVES, Volkswagen was not even considered for battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. But now, discussions with the factory regarding these technologies have become a regular occurrence, thanks to NVES.
While the implementation of emissions standards has added complexity behind the scenes, Volkswagen believes that the outcome is beneficial for both car companies and buyers. The company sees the new regulations as a positive development, allowing them to be part of product planning discussions earlier and enabling them to have a seat at the table for important decisions.
Acting corporate communications general manager, Daniel DeGasperi, highlighted that as emissions regulations are expected to become stricter globally, there will be an increasing focus on hybrid and electric vehicles. Being part of the Volkswagen Group provides leverage in negotiating better prices with factories and navigating the evolving market demands.
In conclusion, the automotive industry in Australia is undergoing a transformation driven by new legislation promoting fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles. With the introduction of NVES, automakers like Volkswagen are adapting their strategies to meet the changing market demands and position themselves for success in the future.
