Industry Impact: Microsoft’s Job Cuts Shake Up Artists, Game Designers, and Producers in Washington State

Microsoft recently announced a reduction of 277 jobs in the Seattle region, primarily affecting artists, game designers, and producers, according to a new filing.

These job cuts were disclosed under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. The layoffs are part of Microsoft’s ongoing Xbox restructuring efforts, which were outlined earlier this week.

Within the 277 impacted positions, roles in art, game production, game design, technical art, and audio design make up a significant portion. Software engineering is the largest category, with 60 roles affected.

Other impacted positions span various functional areas such as product marketing, technical writing, product management, data science, business management, finance, and legal.

The filing specifies that 252 of the affected positions are located at Microsoft’s Redmond campus, while the remaining 25 are held by remote employees in the region, totaling 277 job cuts in total. Microsoft had previously indicated that around 300 of the layoffs would occur in Washington state, out of a global total of fewer than 600.

Of the global total, 268 job cuts were within Xbox Game Studios, as part of a restructuring initiative aimed at driving growth and profitability in the games division. The Halo Studios in Redmond experienced a significant reduction, with work on the next Halo game transitioning to Microsoft’s Activision subsidiary.

In July, Microsoft eliminated 605 jobs in Washington as part of a larger wave of layoffs affecting 4,800 employees worldwide at the time. Throughout 2025, the company has cut over 15,000 positions globally across two rounds of layoffs.
