To address this challenge, the University of Hertfordshire has partnered with regional NHS health bodies to implement cutting-edge machine learning techniques for operational planning. The AI model relies on five years of historical data to generate accurate projections. It considers key metrics such as admissions, treatments, bed capacity, and workforce availability, as well as local demographic factors like age, gender, ethnicity, and deprivation levels.

Heading the project is Iosif Mporas, Professor of Signal Processing and Machine Learning at the University of Hertfordshire. Supported by a team of dedicated researchers, the project is set to evolve and expand its capabilities through 2026.

Professor Mporas highlighted the collaborative nature of the project with the NHS, emphasizing the tool’s ability to forecast potential scenarios and quantify the impact of demographic changes on healthcare resources.

Enhancing Healthcare Operations with AI Forecasting

The AI model generates forecasts that predict shifts in healthcare demand over the short, medium, and long term. This forward-looking capability empowers leadership to move beyond reactive decision-making and adopt a more proactive stance.

Charlotte Mullins, Strategic Programme Manager for NHS Herts and West Essex, underscored the significance of strategic demand modeling in healthcare operations. She emphasized the tool’s potential to influence patient outcomes and support the implementation of long-term strategic plans.

Funded by the University of Hertfordshire Integrated Care System partnership, the project is currently undergoing testing in hospital settings. Future plans include extending the model to community services and care homes to cater to the evolving healthcare landscape.

The project’s alignment with regional structural changes, such as the merger of healthcare boards, underscores its adaptability and relevance to the shifting healthcare landscape. By incorporating data from a wider population, the model aims to enhance its predictive accuracy and support informed decision-making.
