Apple has not yet announced the official release date for iOS 27, but based on past patterns, it is expected to launch in the next few weeks. The ‘Surprise and Shine’ iPhone Event is scheduled for September 9, which suggests that iOS 27 may be released around September 14–16, typically a week after new iPhones are unveiled but before they hit stores.

iOS 27 introduces a major upgrade to Siri, known as Siri AI. Users may need to join a waitlist after updating to iOS 27, although the duration of the wait is uncertain.

However, the waitlist is not the only hurdle to utilizing Siri AI to its full potential. The iPhone also needs time to build semantic indexes so that Siri can efficiently access personal data like messages, emails, and calendar events for use in its responses.

This indexing process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the amount of data on the iPhone. Installing iOS 26.6 or later prior to iOS 27 can help expedite the indexing process and ensure that Siri AI is fully functional.

Apple recommends installing iOS 26.6 for improved indexing capabilities and enhanced security features. Subsequent updates may also trigger indexing processes, but having iOS 26.6 installed should streamline the process for iOS 27.

During the indexing process, users may notice an ‘Optimizing Search & Siri’ section in the Settings app, indicating that the indexing is underway. Apple suggests that indexing is faster when the device is not in use, connected to power, and connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Spotlight indexing, as explained by Apple, can take hours or days to complete initially, with subsequent updates being quicker. Despite the indexing process, Siri AI will still function in iOS 27, but accurate personal context search results will only be available once the indexing is complete.
