Sony announces price increase for PlayStation consoles in Europe, Japan, and the United States

Sony has recently revealed that they will be implementing a price increase for their PlayStation family of consoles in key regions such as Europe, Japan, and the United States. However, there has been no indication of price adjustments for other territories including Asia, Australasia, Canada, and South America. For more information on pricing in other regions, consumers are advised to contact their local retailer or visit direct.playstation.com.

Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony, explained the decision behind the price hike in a statement on the official PlayStation Blog. She cited the ongoing challenges in the global economic landscape as the primary reason for the increase. Tomatis emphasized that the price adjustment was necessary to ensure the continued delivery of innovative and high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide. The revised recommended retail prices for the PS5 consoles will take effect from April 2, 2026.

The new prices for the PS5 consoles are as follows:

United States

  • PS5 – $649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
  • PS5 Pro – $899.99

United Kingdom

  • PS5 – £569.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
  • PS5 Pro – £789.99

Europe

  • PS5 – €649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99
  • PS5 Pro – €899.99

Japan

  • PS5 – ¥97,980
  • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980
  • PS5 Pro – ¥137,980

The price of the PlayStation Portal will also be adjusted:

  • United States – $249.99
  • United Kingdom – £219.99
  • Europe – €249.99
  • Japan – ¥39,980

In the UK, this translates to an increase of £90 on all PS5 consoles and £20 on the PlayStation Portal. This marks the third price hike in Europe and the second in the United States, a departure from past trends where console prices typically decreased over time as manufacturing costs decreased. However, market forces such as AI technology driving up prices for memory, hard drives, and GPUs have contributed to the current price adjustments.

Despite the price increase, Sony has not yet announced plans for the release of the PS6 console. Analysts speculate that the potential cost of a new console would likely exceed that of the current PS5 Pro, especially considering rising expenses due to global economic factors. Additionally, the impact of geopolitical events, such as the USA’s military actions in Iraq, may further influence consumer spending habits.

Update: Industry experts predict that competitors such as Microsoft and Nintendo may also follow suit with price adjustments in response to market conditions. Piers Harding-Rolls, a prominent analyst, suggests that supply chain disruptions and rising component prices have necessitated Sony’s decision to increase hardware prices. He anticipates similar moves from other major players in the gaming industry in the near future.
