Armenia’s Pursuit of Compute Sovereignty: Beyond AI Betting and Chip Manufacturing
Armenia, despite being a small and not particularly wealthy or famous country, has made significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). It has embraced various AI products like the Clideo subtitles generator for video editing and has also made headlines in global news, particularly in the realms of politics and tech advancements.
One notable development is the alleged involvement of Armenia in the manufacturing of chips for NVIDIA, a well-known name in the tech industry. However, it’s essential to clarify that Armenia is not aiming to become a chip fabrication powerhouse akin to Taiwan. The chips in question, NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, are actually manufactured using a custom TSMC 4NP process, placing the core chip production within the global semiconductor supply chain rather than solely in Armenia.
Armenia’s focus lies more on becoming a regional AI compute hub, leveraging high-end NVIDIA infrastructure, U.S.-approved chip transfers, local telecom and energy capabilities, and advocating for smaller countries’ access to AI computing power.
The centerpiece of this endeavor is the Firebird project, a collaboration between a U.S.-based AI cloud and infrastructure company and Armenia’s Ministry of High-Tech Industry. The first phase of the Firebird AI center near Hrazdan is set to commence around 2026, involving a substantial investment, numerous NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, and significant computational power.
Real Story Behind Infrastructure
Despite the buzz surrounding chip production, Armenia’s role primarily revolves around AI infrastructure, cloud services, electronics/IC development, engineering talent, and semiconductor-related research and development. The country aims to host advanced AI infrastructure rather than focus solely on chip manufacturing.
NVIDIA’s approach to AI infrastructure as AI factories, which manufacture intelligence rather than physical goods, aligns with Armenia’s vision. The collaboration involves cutting-edge technologies like rack-scale systems combining GPUs and CPUs for high-density AI training and inference.
Reports confirm the approval of advanced NVIDIA chips for Armenia’s AI hub, underscoring the strategic significance of the project in terms of export controls and international partnerships.
Why Armenia Wants AI Compute So Badly
Armenia’s pursuit of AI compute capabilities stems from its existing technological base in software engineering, mathematics, and electronic design. The Firebird project aims to bridge the gap by providing extensive computational resources to support local talent, research, startups, and public services.
