The Future of Grand Theft Auto Multiplayer: Insights from Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games has finally shed some light on their plans for the future of Grand Theft Auto multiplayer post the release of GTA 6 on consoles in November. Recent filings submitted by the studio during a legal battle over the termination of 34 developers last year hint at exciting developments.

Within the extensive documents provided by Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive to RPS, it was revealed that one of the game features discussed by the terminated staff on a union-run Discord server was an “online 32 player format” that was deemed highly confidential at the time. This suggests the potential introduction of 32 player online sessions in GTA 6 or a new iteration of GTA Online linked to the upcoming installment in the iconic crime series.

According to Rockstar’s filings, the sharing of details related to online player numbers for a confidential project before its public announcement was a cause for concern within the studio. The leaked information, including design decisions and main character names, had a significant impact on Rockstar’s marketing strategy, prompting them to take swift action against the culprits.

Despite Rockstar’s efforts to maintain confidentiality, instances of leaked information have surfaced, leading to a legal battle between the company and the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB). The ongoing dispute revolves around allegations of union busting and unauthorized disclosure of sensitive details on public platforms.

Speculations about the inclusion of 32 player sessions in GTA 6’s online mode have sparked curiosity among fans. However, concerns about the potential chaos arising from the presence of missile-firing Oppressor Mark 2 rocket bikes from GTA 5’s online component remain unanswered. The prospect of more high-profile criminals wreaking havoc in the game world raises questions about the gameplay experience for players.

As the release date for GTA 6’s online component remains uncertain, alongside its availability on PC, fans are left to anticipate the eventual unveiling of these features. The convergence of the base game’s console launch in November may offer insights into the timelines for the online mode’s debut. Nevertheless, delays are expected as Rockstar fine-tunes the multiplayer experience for players.
