Google Maps is getting AI-powered ‘Ask Maps’ feature and more immersive navigation

Google has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “Ask Maps” on Google Maps, allowing users to ask complex, real-world questions and receive highly detailed, personalized responses. This feature is powered by Gemini, Google’s latest enhancement to its products.

Previously, Google Maps struggled with hyper-specific queries like finding a place to charge a phone without waiting in line for coffee or locating a clean public restroom nearby. With Gemini, users can now get answers to all kinds of unique and slightly embarrassing questions, along with detailed directions.

Ask Maps allows users to describe their plans conversationally, providing as much or as little detail as they want. Gemini analyzes the queries to offer detailed responses, often incorporating personal information from past interactions with Google Maps.

During a briefing, Google product manager Andrew Duchi gave an example of how Ask Maps works, such as finding a vegetarian restaurant with a cozy aesthetic and a table for four between two locations. The feature leverages user reviews and photos to provide recommendations, and it can even help book a table with a single tap.

Gemini ensures that responses on Ask Maps are based solely on data from Google Maps and not from other Google apps like Gmail. Personalized information is drawn from previous searches and interactions within Maps or Google Search, focusing on saved locations and favorited places.

When asked about the potential for businesses to pay for prominent placement in AI-generated recommendations, Duchi mentioned that current paid placements do not influence Ask Maps suggestions. The feature is rolling out in the US and India this week, with desktop support coming soon.

In addition to Ask Maps, Google is introducing “Immersive Navigation” to enhance the Google Maps experience. This upgrade includes refreshed colors, detailed 3D buildings, elevated roadways, realistic terrain, and dynamic zooming for critical road information.

The new navigation interface will explain route suggestions and highlight key road features like lanes, crosswalks, and traffic lights. This feature aims to provide drivers with a better understanding of their route and help them navigate confidently. Immersive Navigation will launch in the US next week and expand to other regions.
