Unlocking the Secrets of DNA: Houdini Bio Secures €1.7 Million to Combat Gene Silencing in Gene Therapies
British BioTech startup, Houdini Bio, has emerged from stealth mode today after securing approximately €1.7 million (£1.5 million) in pre-Seed funding to validate its DNA sequence design infrastructure platform. This platform is designed to overcome biological barriers that currently limit the effectiveness of genetic medicines.
The funding round was led by SCVC, the venture arm of Science Creates, with participation from Deep Science Ventures and the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Enterprise VC). With this combined funding, Houdini Bio was able to quickly validate its technology and achieve technical milestones in a fraction of the anticipated time.
Jonathan Cohen-Gold, CEO and co-founder of Houdini Bio, stated, “The industry has made significant progress in proving that genetic medicines can cure diseases that were previously untreatable. However, the cellular machinery often rejects these therapies, leading to limited long-term effectiveness and the need for costly, unsafe doses.”
He further explained, “Our platform introduces a crucial shift from trial-and-error screening to a more systematic, engineering-driven DNA design approach. By identifying the molecular rules that allow sequences to evade cellular rejection, we can modify therapeutic DNA to bypass cellular checkpoints. This breakthrough bridges the gap between these innovative medicines, the market, and the patients who stand to benefit from them.”
Houdini Bio’s pre-Seed funding places it at the early stage of a 2026 European BioTech funding trend where capital is increasingly being invested in platform technologies that address bottlenecks in drug development rather than individual therapeutic assets.
The company’s focus on DNA sequence engineering to overcome cellular silencing mechanisms aligns with a broader trend of infrastructure-layer BioTech companies in the European market. This trend includes companies working on AI-driven molecule design, gene and cell therapy manufacturing optimization, and synthetic biology platforms.
Geographically, the UK, particularly London and Cambridge, has seen strong clustering of BioTech companies, indicating sustained depth in AI-enabled infrastructure. Continental Europe, including Germany, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, is also witnessing growth in synthetic biology and immunotherapy platforms.
Harry Destecroix, Founder and Managing Partner of SCVC, commented, “Gene therapies hold great promise for the future of medicine, but they face commercial and biological obstacles. Houdini Bio represents the kind of DeepTech infrastructure that the industry needs to overcome these challenges. By addressing DNA silencing at its core, the company is poised to revolutionize the efficacy and economics of gene and cell therapies.”
Founded in 2025, Houdini Bio is a DeepTech BioTech company that provides essential infrastructure for next-generation genetic medicines. By leveraging machine learning and a deep understanding of cellular silencing pathways, the company’s DNA rewiring toolkit helps therapy developers enhance transgene expression, durability, and scalability. This transformation is expected to improve outcomes for patients with various conditions, including blindness, cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, dementia, and cancer.
While gene and cell therapies are advancing rapidly, their impact is hindered by the human cell’s tendency to mistake therapeutic DNA for a viral threat, triggering natural defenses that silence the medicine. Houdini Bio’s approach aims to address this issue by genetically camouflaging the medicine, making it invisible to the cell’s defenses and increasing its efficacy at lower doses.
The company plans to continue expanding its team and forming co-development partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, DeepTech innovators, and developers interested in integrating anti-silencing technology into their drug pipelines. Houdini Bio’s innovative approach to genetic medicine has the potential to transform the landscape of healthcare and improve patient outcomes significantly.
