Amazon’s Panos Panay addresses new Fire phone rumors

Amazon’s Future in Smartphone Development

Panos Panay, Amazon’s head of devices and services, recently hinted at the possibility of the company releasing a new smartphone. While he did not confirm plans for a smartphone, he also did not outright deny it. This comes more than a decade after Amazon’s unsuccessful Fire Phone venture.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Panay addressed rumors surrounding a potential new smartphone from Amazon. When asked directly about the matter, he stated, “It’s just not the goal. I know there’s a lot of rumors out there.”

Panay further elaborated on the topic, saying, “I think your black and white question is, are you going after a phone? A lot of people want me to say no, but a lot of people want me to say yes, I get it. Here’s my take: it’s not necessarily [that] we’re going after a phone, no.”

He added, “It’s a tricky question. If I black and white say no, I would say that was accurate. But I also think it’s misleading.”

Panay’s response to the question suggests that Amazon’s approach to smartphones may be different from traditional models. The reported “Transformer” project is said to incorporate Amazon’s Alexa Plus AI assistant and explore innovative form factors.

While discussing AI wearables, Panay hinted at new form factor developments within Amazon. This indicates that the company’s future in phone technology may involve unconventional designs. After past challenges with the Fire Phone, Amazon seems cautious about reentering the smartphone market.
