OpenAI Appoints Former Uber India Chief to Head International Expansion
OpenAI’s Strategic Move Towards Expansion in India
OpenAI has recently made a significant move by appointing Prabhjeet Singh, former Uber India and South Asia president, as its first managing director for India. This decision reflects OpenAI’s commitment to scaling its presence in India, which it considers as its second-largest market after the U.S.
Singh, who will join OpenAI in September, will be reporting to Kiran Mani, the company’s managing director for Asia Pacific. His role will involve overseeing OpenAI’s performance in India across various aspects such as consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations.
OpenAI’s investment in India has been steadily growing. The company established its first office in New Delhi last year and announced plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. With key hires like Pragya Misra and Rishi Jaitly, OpenAI is aiming to strengthen its presence in the Indian market.
OpenAI’s partnerships in India have expanded to include collaborations in higher education, enterprise payments, AI-powered commerce, and web streaming. The company has also been actively participating in India’s data center build-out. Notably, Indian conglomerates like Reliance and Tata Group are among OpenAI’s early partners in the market.
Furthermore, OpenAI has been increasing its hiring efforts in India, with job openings for roles such as AI deployment engineers, developer experience engineers, developer marketing lead, partner director, and solutions engineers.
India has emerged as a key battleground for U.S. AI companies due to factors like a vast developer base, over a billion internet users, and a growing demand for generative AI. Competitors like Anthropic have also recognized the potential in the Indian market, with the opening of their office in Bengaluru and the appointment of Irina Ghose as their India head.
As OpenAI continues to expand its footprint in India, the company is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of AI development and adoption in the country.
