Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's Chimera tank boss fight was apparently so complex it took two years of "reiterating over and over" to get it right

The Making of the Chimera Tank Boss Fight in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Upon encountering the Chimera tank boss fight in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, my initial reaction was one of awe at its extravagance. The Ghost in the Shell-inspired tank, with its flashy design, chases the player in a cinematic set piece before ultimately settling in one spot for the final showdown. Little did I know, creating such a grandiose boss fight required two years of intensive work and collaboration.

In a recent interview on the AnsweRED Podcast, game director Gabe Amatangelo and creative director Igor Sarzyński shed light on the production challenges faced by CD Projekt Red during the development of Cyberpunk 2077. Amatangelo explained, “Sometimes we’re making content that’s a nexus point of different disciplines; the Chimera is a great example of that. It involved gameplay, narrative, art, and worldbuilding.” The attention to detail was evident, with art director Paweł Mielniczuk and Amatangelo exchanging YouTube videos of military equipment to ensure the tank’s intimidating presence.

Mielniczuk, the host of the interview, shared insights into the lengthy production process, stating, “We were iterating – I think it was two years to make this boss fight work. We were reiterating over and over.” Amatangelo emphasized the complexity of the project, mentioning the challenges of balancing gameplay, narrative, and art elements. The collaborative effort resulted in a meticulously crafted boss fight that demanded attention to every detail.

The meticulous approach extended to the tank’s design, with Mielniczuk revealing, “We were doing the tank I think four times, changing equipment, the weapons.” Sarzyński added, “It was one of the most expensive art assets I think ever.” Despite the significant investment, the team was committed to creating a memorable and immersive experience for players.

While the leadup to the boss fight showcases impressive visuals, some critics argue that the actual gameplay falls short of expectations. The encounter takes place in a relatively open arena, with limited movement from the tank. However, understanding the extensive development process provides valuable context for appreciating the dedication and creativity that went into creating this iconic moment in Cyberpunk 2077.
