Polyarc, Developer of Moss Series, Closes Down After 12 Years

Polyarc, the renowned studio known for creating the beloved Moss series of virtual reality adventures featuring a mousey protagonist, has made the heartbreaking announcement of its closure.

On LinkedIn, the studio shared the news, expressing their gratitude and bidding farewell to their devoted team:

“Today marks the end of a significant chapter for Polyarc. After more than a decade of crafting video games filled with emotions, our journey together concludes. As we wrap up our active projects, we say our goodbyes to each other.

It has been an honor to collaborate with such talented individuals throughout the years. Bringing joy and surprise to our players has been a privilege. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Polyarc as we close this chapter.”

We appreciate everyone who has been part of this incredible journey.”

Established in 2015 by former employees of Bungie and Rockstar, Polyarc ventured into the emerging virtual reality market with a vision. Their debut game, Moss, released a few years later, received critical acclaim for its immersive VR experience where players guide Quill, a courageous mousey hero, on an epic adventure. The success led to a sequel in 2022, initially exclusive to PSVR.

Despite initial success, the virtual reality gaming industry faced challenges over the years. With major players like Sony and Meta shifting focus away from VR, Polyarc attempted to expand the Moss universe with a multiplayer game, Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss. Additionally, they adapted their original games for flat screens with the release of Moss: The Forgotten Relic, featuring local co-op gameplay.

However, these efforts were not enough to sustain the studio, leading to its closure. The inability to secure further investments for new projects added to the challenges faced by Polyarc.

In this tough time for the industry, we hope that the talented individuals at Polyarc find new opportunities to showcase their skills and creativity.
