iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Freezing Bug: Update on Fix Release Date
Apple’s most recent devices in 2026 seem to be facing some initial issues, commonly referred to as “version zero” problems. While not affecting everyone, these issues are widespread enough for the company to quickly work on releasing early bug fix updates.
Recently, Apple rolled out watchOS 27.0.1 specifically for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 to address a bug encountered by many users who had just purchased these new wearables. The bug caused spontaneous and seemingly random reboots, believed to be triggered by a Neural Engine timeout.
Unfortunately, the new Apple Watch models are not the only ones facing challenges. Several owners of the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have also experienced freezes and reboots on their new devices. This issue seems to be linked to failed Face ID authentication attempts, leading to restarts that may not be entirely random. Reports of these issues surfaced on Reddit within 24 hours of the new models being released to customers.
Users have noted the problem occurring when using Face ID to unlock content within the iPhone, such as hidden or locked apps, private Safari tabs, and even Apple Pay. While it seems less common from the lock screen, there have been sporadic reports of it happening in that scenario as well.
Personally, I have not encountered this issue as I quickly moved on to the iOS 27.2 developer beta after setting up my new iPhone 18 Pro Max. This suggests that Apple may have already addressed the issue in the beta version, although it is not clear if this was an intentional fix or a result of other changes in the newer version.
It is uncertain whether this issue affects all devices and configurations, but users can test by simulating a Face ID failure – simply cover your face and try to unlock an app. When the failure occurs, tapping “Try Face ID again” may cause the iPhone to freeze and stop responding to touch input, eventually rebooting to the lock screen.
Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that they are actively working on a fix, expected to be included in an upcoming iOS 27.0.1 update. Unfortunately, the fix may not be available until next week, leaving affected users to wait a bit longer.
This situation confirms that the issue is likely a software-related problem. Some users mentioned that Apple Support replaced their faulty iPhones with new ones, but at least one user reported the same issue with the replacement device.
While some reports are inconclusive, Apple’s commitment to releasing a software fix suggests that contacting Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store may not be necessary. Swapping out the iPhone for a new one could be a significant inconvenience for an issue that will likely be resolved with a software update soon.
