Introducing Gemini: The Ultimate Home Surveillance AI

Over the weekend, I decided to test out Google’s new Gemini for Home AI by turning my home into a surveillance lab for 72 hours. I wanted to see if having an AI that monitors everything happening in my house would be helpful or just plain creepy.

The Nest cameras installed in my home, powered by Gemini for Home, provided detailed descriptions of our every move. From unpacking items to washing dishes, the AI was able to accurately interpret and narrate the activities happening in and around my home. With facial recognition technology, it even identified who or what was present and what they were doing.

The alerts from the cameras were precise, providing specific details like the number of animals on the porch or identifying family members. However, the daily summaries called Home Briefs in the Google Home app sometimes leaned more towards fiction than fact. While the real-time alerts were mostly accurate, the summaries in the Activity Tab often included inaccuracies and exaggerated details.

Despite the AI’s ability to provide detailed descriptions, there were some errors and selective interpretations. For example, it failed to identify weapons like a shotgun or accurately describe certain actions. The heavy-handed editorializing in the daily summaries also raised concerns about the AI’s reliability for home security purposes.

While the AI descriptions for outdoor cameras proved useful, the inaccuracies in the daily summaries made me hesitant to rely on indoor cameras. The AI’s attempts at interpreting what matters fell short of expectations, highlighting the need for more accuracy and usefulness in AI-powered surveillance systems.

In conclusion, while the AI technology shows promise in improving home security notifications, there is still room for improvement in terms of accuracy and reliability. For now, I remain cautious about fully embracing AI surveillance in my home until it can provide more accurate and meaningful insights.
