Apple’s AI Chief John Giannandrea Steps Down Amid Siri Challenges

Apple SVP John Giannandrea

Apple has recently confirmed the retirement of AI chief John Giannandrea, leading to the restructuring of its Machine Learning and AI Strategy Division. While Apple remains committed to AI, Giannandrea’s exit has resulted in the integration of AI into the software engineering division, overseen by Senior Vice President Craig Federighi. The software aspect will be led by newly appointed VP Amar Subramanya, with infrastructure and operational responsibilities now under COO Sabih Khan and services chief Eddy Cue.

The new AI chief at Apple, Amar Subramanya, previously managed AI research at Microsoft and had a long tenure at Google, where he worked under Giannandrea. Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed gratitude for Giannandrea’s contributions to Apple’s AI advancements and welcomed Subramanya to the leadership team.

Despite Apple’s positive portrayal of the leadership transition, Giannandrea’s retirement hints at potential challenges during his tenure. His efforts to enhance Siri and oversee projects like the Apple Car were met with mixed results. Siri’s delayed improvements and the unsuccessful Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18 raised doubts about Giannandrea’s ability to deliver on product development.

The shift in responsibilities within Apple’s AI division, including the reassignment of Siri to Craig Federighi, signaled a change in direction. Giannandrea’s expertise in research may not have aligned with Apple’s product-focused approach, leading to his retirement in 2026. While he will continue to advise Apple during the transition, his departure marks the end of an era for the Machine Learning and AI Strategy Division.

The legacy of Giannandrea’s contributions to Apple’s AI efforts is undeniable, but the company’s decision to restructure reflects the need for a more tangible and product-oriented approach. Giannandrea’s departure highlights the evolving landscape of AI at Apple and the company’s commitment to innovation in the field.
