Microsoft Unites Copilot Apps for Ultimate ‘Super App’ Experience

Microsoft is taking a significant step by merging its consumer and commercial Copilot AI assistants into a single interface, starting with the Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps. The move aims to streamline user experience by consolidating personal and work accounts into the new unified app, dubbed “Microsoft Copilot.” This update also introduces a refreshed app icon, eliminating the presence of two separate Copilot icons in the system tray or taskbar.

In an official announcement, Microsoft stated, “Starting with a fresh look, the updated app combines the best of Copilot chat and image creation with the power of Microsoft 365 for your work.” These updates mark a technical milestone in preparation for the upcoming “super app” launch later this year, laying the groundwork for the evolution of Copilot products.

Microsoft plans to roll out the unified mobile and web apps globally starting in mid-August, followed by Windows and Mac apps in mid-September. Mobile users will receive prompts to download the new Copilot app, while Windows Insiders can expect to see the updates this week.

Existing users of Microsoft Copilot will seamlessly transition to the updated version, retaining their chats and content. Meanwhile, Microsoft 365 Copilot app users will experience minor navigation adjustments, an updated icon, and access to Copilot chat functionality. Users of both apps will have their chats and content merged into a single updated Copilot app, with data remaining segregated between personal and work accounts within the app.

Enterprise security, compliance, and government controls will remain unchanged, allowing users to switch between personal Microsoft accounts and Microsoft Entra ID accounts without overlap. Core Copilot features will remain free, although some users may encounter revised usage limits in the updated app.

However, certain features like Podcasts and Deep Research will be retired after August 18th, and Group Chat threads and content will not carry over to the new app. Microsoft assures users that services like Shopping and Copilot Health may experience temporary unavailability during the update rollout.

The restructuring of Copilot follows Microsoft’s appointment of a new Copilot chief to oversee both consumer and commercial aspects of the AI assistant. The company is steering Copilot towards a more unified commercial user interface, departing from its original design introduced in 2024 under the leadership of Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman.
