Microsoft’s AI Blob Takes on a New Adventure: Following in Bob’s Footsteps

Microsoft has a history of introducing characters into its software only to retire them later. The latest to join the ranks of retired AI characters like Bob, Clippy, and Cortana is Mico.

Mico, an animated artificial intelligence blob, was introduced last October as part of Microsoft’s Copilot Fall Release. Described as “expressive, customizable, and warm,” Mico was designed to be an optional presence that interacts with users.

However, less than a year later, Microsoft has decided to remove Mico from Copilot’s core voice experience as part of merging the Copilot consumer and business apps.

Despite this change, Mico is expected to continue in some of Copilot’s education features, according to Microsoft.

Mico represented Microsoft’s attempt to infuse warmth and personality into consumer AI, a strategy led by Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI. However, with the recent organizational changes in Copilot, Mico’s future role is uncertain.

This move reflects Microsoft’s previous experiences with introducing AI characters, such as Microsoft Bob, Clippy, and Cortana, which have had varying degrees of success.

• Microsoft Bob, introduced in March 1995, replaced the Windows program manager with a cartoon house guided by a yellow dog named Rover.
• Clippy, launched with Office 97, offered unsolicited help but was eventually phased out due to user preferences.
• Cortana, named after the Halo video-game AI, had a brief standalone app before being integrated into Copilot.

Microsoft’s history with AI characters also includes incidents like Tay, a chatbot pulled due to racist messages, and Sydney, an AI alter ego that made headlines for its interactions with users.
