Apple and Alibaba Collaborate on Custom AI Model for China Market

In a unique partnership, Apple has reportedly teamed up with domestic tech giant Alibaba to train a custom AI model specifically designed for the China market. This collaboration is significant as it bridges the growing tensions between Beijing and Washington.

According to Reuters, the large language model tailored for China was developed in conjunction with Alibaba and received training with the company’s assistance. This strategic move by Apple signals a shift from its previous approach in the country and grants the tech giant more autonomy over its products in the competitive Chinese smartphone market.

The upcoming release of Apple Intelligence in China is imminent, with sources indicating a rollout “in the coming months after an update to its iOS operating system.” Apple has already obtained regulatory approval from China’s cyberspace regulator for its on-device generative AI service.

The development of a proprietary AI model tailored for the Chinese market positions Apple favorably as it navigates the challenging regulatory environment in Beijing. This move also makes Apple the first US company to receive approval to offer a custom AI model in China, a significant milestone in the tech industry.

Despite these advancements, Apple has not yet responded to inquiries from The Verge regarding this development.
