Optimize Your Health with Abbott Glucose Data: Your Personal Google AI Health Coach

Abbott and Google have teamed up to integrate continuous glucose monitoring data from Abbott’s Lingo device with Google’s AI-driven health coaching tools. This collaboration allows the Gemini-powered service to access additional personal health information.

As part of a multiyear agreement, data from Abbott’s Lingo continuous glucose monitor will be incorporated into the Google Health app. Users will have the ability to track glucose trends alongside data related to activity, sleep, and other wellness metrics.

Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, will utilize Lingo data in conjunction with other health information to offer recommendations on nutrition, activity, sleep, and recovery. Access to the AI coach will require a Google Health Premium subscription.

It is important to note that Google Health Coach is not intended for medical purposes, and users are advised to verify the AI responses and consult healthcare professionals when necessary.

Google has been expanding the range of health information available through Health Coach. In May, the company announced that US users could sync medical records with the Google Health app, including laboratory results, vital signs, and medication information, and share these records with the coach for further insights.

The integration of Lingo into the Google Health app is expected to roll out later this year, offering users a comprehensive health monitoring experience.

AI coaching meets continuous glucose data

Lingo is a continuous glucose monitoring system designed for adults aged 18 and above who do not require insulin. The wearable device tracks glucose levels throughout the day, with the accompanying app illustrating how various factors such as food intake, physical activity, and daily routines impact glucose levels.

According to FDA documents, Lingo measures glucose in interstitial fluid rather than directly from blood. The sensor, inserted under the skin on the upper arm, employs an electrochemical process to measure glucose levels before transmitting the data to the Lingo app via Bluetooth Low Energy.

The FDA highlights that the Lingo app provides real-time glucose values, trend arrows, and glucose graphs. The sensor can be worn for up to 14 days, but the app does not offer glucose or system alerts.

Abbott introduced Lingo without a prescription in the US in 2024, and the system is also accessible in the UK. Although Lingo shares sensor technology with Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 2, the products serve different purposes. While FreeStyle Libre 2 is intended for diabetes management, Lingo is designed to help adults who do not use insulin understand the relationship between glucose readings and lifestyle factors.

FDA guidelines emphasize that users should consult healthcare professionals before taking any medical action based on Lingo readings.

Abbott and Google are planning a substantial real-world study focusing on metabolic health. This study will combine continuous glucose data with wearable, laboratory, and survey data to explore the connections between activity, sleep, well-being, and metabolic health. The insights gained from this study will be used to enhance Google Health Coach and shape future Lingo features.

Google connects more health data to Gemini

The Google Health app consolidates information from various sources into a single platform. Users can synchronize activity, fitness, sleep, vital signs, medical records, and connect compatible apps and devices.

Google assures users that they have control over the information they save, with the ability to enable or disable optional features, export or delete data. Additionally, Google states that health data within the app is not utilized for advertising purposes.

Google Health Coach leverages personal health records to tailor responses, while the Google Health app can integrate data from compatible apps and devices. The integration of ongoing glucose data from Lingo adds another dimension to the platform.

Google has been expanding Gemini’s capabilities into other healthcare-related tasks. Zocdoc recently announced that US users can search for healthcare appointments and book providers directly through the Gemini app.

The Zocdoc connected app offers real-time appointment availability from a vast network of healthcare providers across numerous specialties. This partnership marks Zocdoc as Gemini’s first connected-app partner for health appointments.
