Unpredictable Pricing: How Amazon’s Fluctuating Rates are Disrupting School Budgets

Amazon’s dynamic pricing is causing chaos for school budgets

School Districts Facing Price Hikes on Basic Supplies Due to Dynamic Pricing on Amazon

A recent report by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) has revealed that school districts are experiencing increased costs for essential supplies because of unpredictable dynamic pricing on Amazon. On average, schools are paying 17 percent more for items compared to traditional local suppliers.

Unpredictable Pricing Trends Causing Concern

According to the report, Amazon Business does not guarantee fixed prices like local suppliers would through contracts, leading to significant price variations. An example highlighted in the report is the stark price difference for Sharpie markers, with one buyer paying $8.99 and another charged $28.63 for the same product on the same day.

Amazon Responds to Allegations

Responding to the report, Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin disputed the findings, labeling the report as “flawed and misleading.” Martin emphasized the challenges of accurately conducting pricing research and criticized the methodology used by ILSR.

Transparency Concerns Surrounding Amazon’s Pricing Algorithm

ILSR raised concerns about Amazon’s lack of transparency regarding how dynamic pricing changes are determined by its algorithm. The report suggests that frequent ordering of items may lead to substantial price fluctuations, with prices varying significantly for the same products.

Impact on Competition and Pricing in the Market

Amazon Business’s presence in the market has reduced competition for school and office supplies, with the number of independent suppliers decreasing over the past decade. A comparison of prices revealed that independent suppliers were able to offer lower prices on a majority of products compared to Amazon.

Contrasting Reports on Amazon’s Pricing

While a study by Profitero highlighted Amazon’s lower prices compared to other retailers, the report indicates that these savings may not reflect the potential discounts that could be negotiated with local suppliers. The dynamic pricing model employed by Amazon Business has raised concerns among schools and local governments.

Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin:

This flawed and misleading report based on data from 2023 misrepresents the facts and does not reflect the significant cost savings Amazon Business provides customers by offering everyday low prices that meet or beat other online providers and powerful tools to lower their spend. Pricing research is notoriously difficult to conduct accurately and typically lacks reliable methodology, including cherry-picked product selections, mismatched product comparisons, and comparing in-stock items with products out-of-stock at competitors. Amazon Business offers customers price ceilings that ensure they don’t pay above an agreed price, while automatically capturing savings when prices are lower.
