Potential Threat to MacBook Neo: Rising RAM Prices pose Risk

The Impact of RAM Shortages on the MacBook Neo

The MacBook Neo, known for its affordability, may soon see changes in its pricing structure due to the ongoing RAM shortage. Analyst Tim Culpan predicts that Apple might discontinue the base configuration priced at $599, leaving only the $699 model with 512GB of storage. This move follows Apple’s recent decision to stop selling the lowest-priced configuration of the Mac mini, increasing its starting price to $799. Similarly, the option for 512GB of RAM in the Mac Studio was removed in March, likely due to RAM shortages.

Increasing Demand and Production

Ironically, the success of the MacBook Neo could lead to pricing adjustments. The laptop’s popularity comes at a time when the RAM shortage is driving up prices for competitors’ products. Demand for the Neo is so high that there is currently a two to three-week wait for shipping on Apple’s website. In response, Apple plans to double production of the Neo to 10 million units, up from the initial estimate of 5 to 6 million.

Challenges in Production

The first batch of MacBook Neos utilized A18 Pro chips leftover from the iPhone 16 Pro. However, for the upcoming batch, Apple will need to order more A18 Pro chips. With the increased cost of producing these chips and higher expenses for other components due to the RAM shortage, manufacturing the second batch of Neos will be more costly for Apple. This may result in a price increase for consumers.
