Legendary Game Developer Vince Zampella Passes Away at 55
The gaming industry mourns the tragic loss of Vince Zampella, a prominent figure in the world of video games. Known as the co-creator of Call of Duty, founder of Respawn Entertainment, and head of EA’s Battlefield franchise, Zampella’s untimely death in a car accident on December 22nd at the age of 55 has left a void in the hearts of many.
Respawn Entertainment expressed their sorrow in a statement on Twitter, stating, “We’re heartbroken by the passing of our founder and dear friend Vince Zampella. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who love him.”
Zampella’s journey in the gaming industry began as a producer at GameTek, but it was his work on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault at 2015, Inc. that propelled him to fame. The success of the Second World War shooter led to the formation of Infinity Ward, where Zampella, along with Jason West and Grant Collier, created the groundbreaking Call of Duty series.
Under Zampella’s leadership, Infinity Ward flourished, producing hit after hit, including the immensely popular Call of Duty franchise. However, his tenure at the studio came to an abrupt end in 2009 when Activision terminated his contract, leading to a legal battle over unpaid royalties.
Despite the challenges, Zampella and West went on to establish Respawn Entertainment in collaboration with EA, where they continued to leave their mark on the gaming world with titles like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
In 2020, Zampella took on a new role at EA, overseeing the LA branch of DICE before assuming control of the Battlefield series in 2021. His influence on the gaming industry was profound, shaping the way games are made and enjoyed by millions of players worldwide.
Zampella’s legacy extends far beyond his professional achievements, touching the lives of those who knew him personally. His impact on the gaming community will be felt for generations to come, ensuring that his memory lives on in the games he created and the hearts of those he inspired.
EA paid tribute to Zampella, acknowledging his significant contributions to the video game industry and the lasting impact of his work. They described him as a friend, colleague, leader, and visionary creator whose influence will continue to shape the world of interactive entertainment.
