In a recent study, AI detection startup GPTZero analyzed all 4,841 papers presented at the renowned Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) held in San Diego. The findings revealed that 51 papers contained 100 fake citations, raising concerns about the accuracy and integrity of academic research in the field of AI.

Being accepted to present at NeurIPS is considered a significant accomplishment in the AI community. However, the use of Language Model Models (LLMs) for citation writing has come under scrutiny following the discovery of these fabricated references.
