Video game company stock prices dip after Google introduces an AI world-generation tool

Major Video Game Companies Experience Stock Declines Following Google’s Project Genie Announcement

On Friday, the stock prices of prominent video game companies such as Take-Two Interactive, Roblox, and Unity witnessed significant drops. This decline occurred just a day after Google unveiled its Project Genie tool, which enables users to engage AI in generating interactive experiences, as reported by Reuters. Take-Two’s stock closed at $220.30, reflecting a 7.93% decrease from the previous day. Roblox saw its stock price at $65.76 (down 13.17%), while Unity’s stock closed at $29.10 (down 24.22%).

The introduction of AI tools like Project Genie has sparked controversy within the creative community. Concerns have been raised regarding allegations of intellectual property theft for training AI models, the environmental impact of AI’s resource consumption, and the implications for artistic output. Diego Rivas from Google DeepMind reassured The Verge that Genie 3, the AI world model powering Project Genie, was primarily trained on publicly available data from the internet. Additionally, a whitepaper from Google DeepMind researchers revealed that the initial Genie model was trained using a vast dataset of over 200,000 hours of internet gaming videos.

Many game developers remain wary of generative AI and its potential role in mimicking existing content to facilitate AI-generated creations. While Project Genie allowed for the creation of game-like environments reminiscent of popular titles such as Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, the experiences lacked the essence of the original games. This has raised concerns in an industry already grappling with layoffs, as Project Genie’s current iteration suggests a shift towards replacing tasks like testing and concept development.

The latest version of Project Genie presented by Google is limited to producing 60-second interactive experiences devoid of scores, objectives, or sound. These creations may exhibit anomalies, such as sudden transitions from roads to grass. Users are restricted to either downloading a video of their experience or generating a new one, with no option to integrate their creations into established game development tools like Unreal Engine or Unity.

Despite skepticism from some quarters, there is a clear push from investors and industry leaders towards AI-driven game development tools. xAI CEO Elon Musk has pledged to deliver “real-time, high-quality shows and video games tailored to individual preferences next year.” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney envisions ongoing advancements in AI focused on game engines and world models, eventually converging for maximum impact. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized the role of AI in enhancing immersive and interactive gaming experiences, a vision articulated shortly after the company’s decision to shutter VR game projects.
