Ford Australia looks to China as it plans major lineup expansion

Ford has exciting plans for its Australian lineup, with two models sourced from China set to join the ranks – the Transit City and the Bronco Basecamp. The brand is actively seeking to fill gaps in its offerings and expand its market coverage.

At the recent Ford Uncovered event in Melbourne, Ford Australia’s president and CEO, Fadi Mawal, confirmed the brand’s intention to increase its presence in the market. With the discontinuation of models like the Fiesta, Focus, Puma, Escape, and Mondeo in recent years, Ford currently only competes in 30% of Australia’s new-vehicle market.

Mawal emphasized the need for growth, stating that Ford aims to double the number of segments it competes in to 60% within the next three years. By the end of the decade, 90% of the brand’s lineup will consist of either new models or significantly refreshed ones.

Ford is committed to evolution and innovation, leveraging its global footprint, including sourcing from China for the first time. This strategic approach allows Ford to offer a diverse lineup without compromising on quality, capability, or affordability.

Looking ahead, Ford plans to offer a wider range of vehicles to cater to different customer preferences, enhance brand loyalty, and drive more traffic to its dealerships. The brand is focused on developing smarter, more affordable vehicles with cutting-edge technology to compete effectively in the market.

The success of Ford’s Australian sales in the first half of the year was largely attributed to the Ranger and Everest models, which accounted for 88.5% of total sales. Moving forward, Ford will continue to design and engineer vehicles tailored to the Australian and New Zealand markets.

The introduction of the Bronco Basecamp and Transit City is just the beginning of Ford’s expansion plans. The brand is exploring opportunities in segments like the small SUV and mid-size SUV categories, where it has been absent for some time.

In China, Ford offers a range of SUVs that could potentially fill the mid-size SUV segment in Australia and New Zealand. Models like the Territory and Equator Sport offer compelling options for customers seeking versatile and efficient SUVs.

Ford’s collaboration with Jiangling Motors and its focus on international expansion demonstrate its commitment to growth and innovation. Despite challenges and criticism, Ford remains determined to evolve and succeed in the ever-changing automotive landscape.

In conclusion, Ford’s strategic approach to product expansion and market coverage reflects its long-term vision and commitment to providing customers with diverse and high-quality vehicles. The brand’s partnership with Chinese manufacturers and its global footprint position it for continued success and growth in the automotive industry.
