Apple has recently released the second developer betas of iOS 26.5 and its other operating systems, following the initial beta release at the end of March. While the focus is not on major new features, as those are expected to be unveiled in iOS 27 at Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, iOS 26.5 does have some interesting updates.

One of the notable changes in iOS 26.5 is the potential improvement in RCS encryption. After a long wait, it seems that RCS end-to-end encryption (E2EE) may finally be ready for prime time. Apple had promised this feature over a year ago, following the announcement of E2EE support as part of the new Messaging Layer Security (MLS) specification by the GSM Association (GSMA). The open standard nature of this encryption made it easier for Apple to adopt it compared to the proprietary E2EE developed by Google for RCS.

In addition to RCS encryption, Apple Maps is getting some significant updates in iOS 26.5. The addition of ads to Apple Maps is becoming more apparent, with a new splash screen appearing when the app is launched. This screen, labeled “Apple Ads,” hints at the integration of advertisements within the Maps app. Another new feature, “Suggested Places,” will provide recommendations for trending locations nearby, including ads for specific venues.

The second beta of iOS 26.5 also introduces improvements such as auto-pairing for Apple’s Magic Accessories and enhancements to the iPhone to Android Transfer feature. There are also signs of a new awards feature in Apple Books and the ability for developers to bill users monthly for annual subscriptions.

Overall, iOS 26.5 brings several updates and improvements across different areas, setting the stage for the more significant changes expected in iOS 27. Apple continues to innovate and enhance its operating systems to provide a better user experience.
