Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix, won’t reach alpha until 2027

At the 2026 Game Developers Conference, Microsoft’s “VP of Next Generation,” Jason Ronald, shared exciting news about the future of Xbox. He announced that the next Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, will feature a custom AMD chip with a significant increase in ray tracing performance, including path tracing.

Additionally, the next-gen version of AMD’s FSR upscaling technology, named FSR Diamond, will be integrated into Project Helix. This technology utilizes machine learning and frame generation to enhance the smoothness of games by creating new frames between existing ones.

Although eagerly anticipated, the release of the next Xbox is not imminent. Microsoft plans to distribute “alpha versions” of Project Helix to developers in 2027, as revealed by Ronald at GDC.

Ronald also highlighted the closer integration between Xbox and Windows, emphasizing the importance of PC gaming. He mentioned that the best of Xbox will be brought to Windows, making PC an essential part of the Xbox ecosystem.

Microsoft is expanding the Xbox mode, originally available on the Xbox Ally handheld, to more Windows computers in select markets starting in April. They are also introducing Advanced Shader Delivery, which precompiles shaders to enable faster downloads of game updates.

Efforts have been made by the Microsoft team to create a seamless Xbox experience across devices and the cloud. The goal is to allow gamers to play 3-5 games simultaneously and switch between console, PC, and cloud gaming effortlessly.

In an effort to simplify game development, Microsoft aims to have developers build games once for both Windows and Xbox. A unified development environment is being created to ensure that the majority of code running on Xbox is the same as on other platforms.

Microsoft’s Game Preservation program, part of the 25th anniversary of Xbox, will re-release older Xbox titles to preserve iconic games from the past. Additionally, some of the most beloved first-party franchises are set to make a return this year.

As part of the 25th anniversary celebrations, Microsoft plans to introduce new ways to play classic games. While details are scarce, Game Preservation hints at the possibility of classic Xbox games coming to PC.

The recent announcement of Project Helix, led by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, promises a premium gaming experience that combines console and PC gaming. Sharma’s vision for Xbox includes a renewed commitment to the console, with a focus on leading in performance.

In conclusion, Microsoft’s future plans for Xbox involve innovation, integration, and preservation of gaming history. With a strong emphasis on bridging the gap between console and PC gaming, Microsoft is poised to deliver exciting experiences for gamers worldwide.
