Marvel’s Wolverine Review Roundup: What Critics Are Saying

As the review embargo for Marvel’s Wolverine has been lifted, critics worldwide have been sharing their thoughts on Sony’s latest PS5 exclusive.

The overall consensus is that while the reviews are not overwhelmingly negative, the game did not quite reach the mid to high 80s aggregate score that PlayStation may have been aiming for, currently sitting at a respectable 79 on OpenCritic.

Our own review, giving the game an 8/10 rating, praised Wolverine for its engaging storyline, captivating characters, and impressive visuals. While the intense combat was a highlight, some critics, including IGN’s Simon Cardy, felt that the lack of enemy variety hindered the gameplay experience.

Cardy, awarding the game a 6/10, commented, “Marvel’s Wolverine’s combat, while satisfying, becomes repetitive before the end, overshadowing the strong character development.”

Similarly, Gamespot’s Tamoor Hussain, also giving Wolverine a 6, noted, “This shows that creating successful superhero games with one character does not guarantee success with another.”

This sentiment was echoed in our review, highlighting the comparisons between Wolverine and Insomniac’s Spider-Man games in terms of gameplay mechanics and combat diversity.

Some critics, such as Skill Up’s Ralph Panebianco, criticized the game for excessive handholding, with mixed reactions from players. Panebianco compared the experience to playing with bumpers in bowling, making it too easy to succeed.

Despite differing opinions on difficulty, we found Wolverine to offer a decent challenge on its second hardest setting, requiring multiple attempts at boss battles and survival challenges. New Game Plus on normal difficulty may be too easy for experienced players but could pose a challenge for casual gamers in certain scenarios.

With Wolverine’s enduring popularity and the resurgence of the X-Men franchise, the game’s performance will be closely watched. While the character’s name holds weight, it may not have the same widespread appeal as Spider-Man due to its mature rating, potentially limiting its audience.
